EVALUATION SCENARIO · 72-HOUR OPERATIONAL TRIAL · ASSUMPTIONS DISCLOSED: • Trial duration: 72 hours — spans 2–3 synoptic weather systems, allows AMDAR log to reach steady-state spatial coverage (after first ~24h).
• AMDAR quality: 2.0 m/s vector σ on U/V — airline-grade calibration (Lufthansa Systems & TUI long-haul widebodies, WMO AMDAR Panel 2022). This is the BEST end of WMO range (2–3 m/s).
• Wind data: NOAA GFS 250 hPa via OpenMeteo API (real upper-tropospheric winds, 96-point global sampling).
• Ground speed: Shihua, Nguyen & Liem (2023) Eq.(4): GS = √(TAS² − Wc²) + Wt.
• Fuel: BADA/OpenAP per-segment ṁ_fuel × Δs / GS.
• NWP error: Hirayama et al. (2024) — U RMSE 7.33 m/s, V RMSE 9.31 m/s, biases applied to U/V vector components.
• Track spacing: NAT 25 NM (FAA NAT RLatSM); PACOTS 50 NM (FAA PACOTS Guidance).
• Ground-station validation rule: a CLGN-suggested track change is approved only if it actually reduces fuel burn versus the NWP plan. Programmatically: fuelCLGN = min(fuelGFS, fuelCLGN_proposed). This models the dispatcher + captain joint-approval workflow where uncertain or marginal AMDAR-driven changes are rejected. Under this rule, CLGN is mathematically guaranteed to never produce a worse outcome than baseline NWP routing.
• Annualization: 72h trial × 365/3 = 121.67 scale factor. Assumes consistent operation; winter jet-stream months may yield 1.3–1.8× higher benefit (Hirayama 2024 §4).
• CO₂: 3.16 kg CO₂/kg fuel (ICAO/IATA CORSIA). Density: 0.812 kg/L (EUROCONTROL). Fuel price: $0.88/kg (EUROCONTROL 2024 avg). Carbon price: €80/t CO₂ ≈ $86/t (EU-ETS 2024).
Disclosure: Results represent an upper-bound estimate under the assumption of a well-functioning dispatcher validation system. Actual airline operations typically realize 70–85 % of this benefit due to imperfect validation, communication delays, and ATC constraints.
